Foam Rolling

Why are foam rollers beneficial?

In the human body shortened bands of muscles, or trigger points, can develop in our muscles and fascia.  These trigger points often occur after an acute injury caused by postural dysfunction, muscular imbalances, repetitive motions, or even from pinched nerves.  These trigger points can generate pain, limit your range of motion, and even restrict you from taking part in activities you enjoy.

Foam rolling is one of many techniques that is used by physiotherapists to help release the tension in these trigger points.  It is effective in reducing pain, promoting mobility, and ultimately restoring function. By rolling these tightened muscles on a foam roller you are applying direct pressure to the shortened muscles which works to restore them back to their proper length.

If you are currently suffering from pain and/or limited range of motion, foam rolling and trigger point release may be beneficial to you.  Call MOMENTUM today to find out how we can help to relieve your pain, assist with your athletic training, or simply get you back to doing what you love most! 403-982-5600

Arthritis and Physio?

What is Osteoarthritis and can physiotherapy help?

Osteoarthritis (OA) - often referred to as arthritis - is a condition characterized by a decrease in joint space. As the joint space begins to decrease there is an increase of friction in the joint. This friction eventually leads to the formation of new bone and when the bones rub together you begin to feel some of the side effects of OA. These side effects include pain, swelling and will often affect a person’s ability to perform their activities of daily living. These symptoms can often be treated with physiotherapy.

When coming for treatment of a joint with OA you can expect to receive education on your condition, a personalized home exercise program, manual therapy, recommendations for activity modifications and, occasionally, splinting or bracing may be recommended.

Don’t continue to live with the pain of OA, give us a call today and see how MOMENTUM Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab can help. 403-982-5600.

Pain while Running?

Why do my hips/knees/feet hurt when I run?

Running is a highly repetitive sport.  Athletes and recreational enthusiasts typically expend hundreds of steps during a single session.  Any errors in technique are compounded by the sheer volume of steps and these errors can leave an athlete parked on ice packs for days.  But running doesn't have to hurt!

Your hip and core strength, stride length, stride frequency, and footwear all influence your running efficiency and injury risk.  Typically, shorter strides, more frequent steps and minimalist shoes help reduce injury.  MOMENTUM Physical Therapy offers recommendations and individualized programming to help you maximize your running potential.

Talk to one of our physiotherapists.  We use specialized training from "The Running Clinic" to analyze your current running technique and also help runners to get started on a safe, effective running program. If you are interested in starting to run or learning about your current running technique and ways to improve it, call MOMENTUM today!  We would love to book you in for a personalized running assessment session. 403-982-5600.

Warm-up!

Is it important to "warm-up" before physical activity?

Yes!! Warming up before taking part in any physical activity is very important as it works to prepare your body for action.  When you "warm-up" prior to physical activity you are actually preparing your muscles, tendons and joints for movement.  This is favourable as it helps to reduce your chance of getting injured.  Traditional "warm-ups" have generally consisted of 30 second static stretches to the large muscles of your body.  However, research has shown that this type of pre-activity preparation actually shuts the muscles down.

Proper "warm-ups" are now recommended to consist of mild-moderate levels of exercises that include movement.  Examples include going for a brisk 10 minute walk, lightly tossing a ball, or dynamic stretching.  A proper "warm-up" should start to get your sweat flowing and its effects will last for about 15 minutes.

To learn more about a proper warm-up program to best prepare you for your sport, call MOMENTUM today! We would love to help get you ready! 403-982-5600.
